In 1967, JOAN DIDION wrote the famous and un-surpassable essay, “FAREWELL TO THE ENCHANTED CITY.” It was written for every reason she was leaving New York, her own personal tale and saga, to the reason she never bought any furniture there, and then suddenly left, never to return from her journey west, to the hills of California. With a another rapid exit, soon, the notorious New York City landmark will cease the same way. The Waldorf Astoria has had opened doors and innumerable brunches, and Waldorf salads for over eighty years in its current location. Its gilded frame has shone brightly on Park Avenue for all the years it has served as the backdrop and scenery to old New York.
As originally reported by the Wall Street Journal earlier this summer, the hotel was sold from Hilton hotels in 2014 to a Chinese holding property group for a historical figure, and is soon to close next summer of 2017. Over 1,000 of the 1,500 rooms will be converted to luxury condos over the period of a three-year renovation. It will retain just under one-third of its guest rooms, which are to become limited and unaffordable.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first New York City landmark to be condo-fied. The Chelsea Hotel was reported by the New York Times back in 2011 to be closing its doors for good, and for the same reason – new construction. The Times also reported in 2015 that the Four Seasons would forever be leaving the famed Seagrams Building, by renown architect, Mr. Mies Van Der Rohe. In the same year, FAO Swartz closed its flagship Midtown Manhattan location, above the basement level Apple store.
With an irrecognizable New York City, an urban metropolis losing its classic charm, I have to wonder…does being modern mean we have to constantly change and never preserve?
Ms.Didion really said it best…
“It is easy to see the beginnings of things, and harder to see the ends.”
