“So Long Frank Lloyd Wright”

Lockridge Medical Clinic

If architecture is the masterpiece, then music is unmistakably its muse. It flows through the hours of production, and serves as the rhythmic force to a continuous soundtrack. Both sensations stand as legends to our cultivated world, and constantly surround us. By the same token, song serves our ears, and architecture is its space. However, we’ve recently eclipsed the two, without any notice…

“SO LONG, FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT” is not just a phase, but a 1970’s melody by the same group that so wonderfully brought us “Mrs. Robinson” and “The Boxer”, just to name a few. Without digressing into ‘behind the music’ for the great SIMON & GARFUNKEL, the song proves to do a lot more than ballad over the split of a creative partnership. It irrevocably brought common fame, to a notorious figure in the realm of what we consider modern architecture. Although modern architecture has stood the test of time, and continued to prove its creative and aesthetic permanence, some of its structures have not. This past week, we have said another goodbye to another Frank Lloyd Wright original.

As Architectural Digest informed us, the LOCKRIDGE MEDICAL CLINIC, was demolished in the middle of the night, and had begun to be stripped of what was a perfectly ‘viable building.’ Preservation boards extended deadlines, and forced meetings, all in attempt to stave off the inevitable, but it so proves that the legend of architecture is the design, not the built. As paper architecture resonates, and the drafts and drawings on paper are the only ones that persists, maybe it was Paul Simon himself that has the best architectural advice of all:

“Architects may come and Architects may go and never change your point of view.”

Regardless of the song’s personal intention, or a bridge over troubled water, I’ll play it in my head, when I hear of a monument coming down, or a loved neighborhood being re-zoned. Architecture is meant to be ever changing, but …

“I think progress progresses too fast.”

-Dr. Seuss
